General Retail Centers:

  • Eastwood Town Center (3001 Preyde Blvd, Lansing)
    Outdoor style mall with many shopping and dining options (dining is pricier, though not super expensive).
  • Meridian Mall in Okemos (1982 W. Grand River Ave, Okemos)
    Indoor mall with shopping and foodcourt.
  • Lansing Mall (5330 West Saginaw Highway, Lansing)
    Indoor mall with shopping and foodcourt.
  • Frandor Shopping Center (416 Frandor Avenue, Lansing)
    An outdoor-style mall with Kroger grocery, Bed Bath & Beyond, Craft stores, Comp USA, Staples, and a plethora of smaller chain and local retailers & restaurants. Also in Frandor is Video to Go, one of the best video rental stores in the area (and one of the last non-chain rental establishments in the region).
  • South Lansing
    This area has many of the larger shopping establishments and a rash of hardware/home stores (i.e., Lowes, Menards, Home Depot). Target, Meijer, Sam's Club, and a number of chain and local restaurants are in this area.
  • Okemos (besides Meridian Mall)
    In and around Okemos there are a number of retailers, regional, local, and national. Meijer, Best Buy, Officemax, Home Depot, Target, Walmart, and Pier One are all here. There are also a number of chain and local restaurants in Okemos, including the always yummy Traveler's Club International Restaurant and Tuba Museum (with over 120 beers available).

    Students are always getting rid of furniture, and the State News is a great place to look!
  • Dicker & Deal (710 E Kalamazoo St # 1, Lansing AND 1701 S Cedar St, Lansing)
    Some pretty rough fellows work at this place, but they're all nice once you get them talking. Dicker & Deal is a sort of consignment shop for furniture, beds, major appliances, bicycles - you name it! It's worth stopping by just to check it out.

    Online community with classifieds which can help with scoring good used items.
  • MSU Surplus - (1344 South Harrison, East Lansing)
    Surplus as tons of cheap desks, file cabinets, mattresses and other university furniture and equiptment. MSU's Recycling is next door so combine trips!
  • Antiques Mega Mall(15487 S. US Highway 27, Lansing - North of Town)
    Has nicer items and the occasional excellent deal.
  • The Newspaper
    Yeah, like everywhere in North America, yard sales and garage sales can be an awesome way to pick up a cheap deal on furniture or other items.
  • Goodwill (6936 S. Cedar St., Lansing)
    The rumor is that this Goodwill does not have great clothes, but that may have changed of late.

  • Goodrich's Shoprite (Trowbridge Plaza, 940 Trowbridge Road, East Lansing)
    This is a great grocery store with a good variety of brands & international foods and a fabulous wine and beer selection. Their meat department is one of the friendliest and best in town, and can provide cuts to specification.
  • Meijer Superstores (Okemos, East Lansing, and South Lansing)
    This regional chain superstore is still family owned, and stocks Michigan produce whenever possible. A "great one-stop shop" and, for out-of-staters, quite an experience. Watch out for "Meijer syndrome" though - it's easy to get lost in over-stimulation.
  • Kroger Food Stores (Frandor Shopping Center, South Lansing, Okemos)
    A solid grocery store.
  • L&L Food Stores (East Lansing, Okemos/Haslett/Lansing)
    Another solid grocery store.
  • Horrocks Farm Market (7420 West Saginaw Highway, Lansing)
    Produce, meats, cheeses, and greenhouse

Health Foods & Farmer's Market

  • Better Health Store (Frandor Shopping Center,305 N Clippert St, Lansing)
    A good selection of health foods, organic goods, and natural foods and supplements. Also within the store is the Better Health Cafe, which has good coffee and food as well.
  • Foods for Living (2655 E Grand River Ave, East Lansing)
    Health foods, organics, and natural produce, much of which is Michigan Grown.
  • Allen Street Farmer's Market (Adjacent to 1619 E. Kalamazoo St.)
    A relatively new, and small but growing, farmer's market growing in popularity. For info see the Allen Neighborhood Center's website.
  • East Lansing Farmers Market (Division Street parking ramp, East Lansing)

    A bit run down, with some non local stuff but some good baklava in the little shop area. Open year round.
