Grad Student Tips for Eating Out

Reccomendations by Food Type:

  • Korean: Charlie Kangs, Korea House, Sushi Q - Korea House has the best Eel sushi in town.
  • Japanese: Omi and Sansu (Sansu has 20% off for students on Tuesdays) - Both serve great sushi as well.
  • Chinese: Golden Wok (good dim sum), Ria (10% for students if you pay with cash), and Peking Express
  • Mexican: Lopez bakery and Pablo's Panaderia
  • Indian: Sindu and Taj
  • Thai: Lai Mai, Bangkok House, Taste of Thai, and Thai
  • Pizza: Pizza House, Bells, Giorgio's (the usual Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc.. are also here)

Specific Tips:

  • Travelers Club has great food with an international flre and a fantastic selection of beer wine.
  • The Peanut Barrel in East Lansing, and Stober's Bar and Art's Grill in Lansing are fun, relatively small, bars with good drink deals.
  • Beggars Banquet has a good wine selection, good food, and fun Sunday brunch. Specials include 50% off bottles of wine on Wednesday and 50% off glasses of wine on Sunday.
  • Asia House on Grand River has some good noodle soups.
  • Magdalena's Tea House is a fun, funky tea house with live performances of poetry, films, and music.
  • Coffee is one of East Lansing's biggest downfalls. For good, but not incredible coffee in East Lansing try Beaner's (scattered throughout town) or Espresso Royale Cafe (on Grand River Ave.). If you like Starbucks they're around as well (nothing against them). Some of the best places for coffee in the area are actually in Lansing; Gone Wired Cafe on Michigan Ave. and Bakin' Cakes on Kalamazoo St. both have fantastic coffee. Bakin' Cakes has incredible sweet treats (and walk-out cakes, too) while Gone Wired Cafe is a huge coffee shop with a nice lunch menu.
  • Many grads never take the time to check out Old Town (for info, see: http://www.oldtownmainstreet.org/), which is a tragedy. Many of the restaurants and shops there offer things that are hard to find anywhere else in the region. Among the cooler places is Creole gallery, which has good shows. Also worth checking out is the best breakfast/lunch place in town, Golden Harvest.
  • Dining in downtown Lansing can be good, but many of the restaraunts cater to the lunch crowd. Call ahead to make sure the place you want to go to is open if it is later than 5pm.
